During the Qin and Han Dynasties, the present-day Shandong region was known as "Thousands of Miles of Fertile Soil" and its agricultural economy was developed. During the Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties, Shandong's economy was in a state of stagnation. In the first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1368), Shandong Xingzhongshu Province was established. In the Qing Dynasty, the administrative region of Shandong was named "Shandong Province". In the early days of the Republic of China, it was divided into four roads: Jinan, Jining, Jiaodong and Donglin. In March 1949, Shandong Province administered 14 cities. In 1967, the province governed a total of 9 regions and 4 provincial cities.
